There is no doubt that selling one's house by auction is becoming increasingly popular. The main advantage is that the exposure to the market is widespread, and often the sale price obtained can be greater than that achieved by normal private treaty, and avoids all the frustration etc. of dealing with so-called interested purchasers who can suddenly withdraw their interest just when you think you have clinched a deal!
As a freelance auctioneer I can conduct auctions for property, fine art and furniture, and locally for registered charities. Prospective bidders are issued with their own bidding numbers which they wave to indicate their interest at a certain price. Scratching your nose or tugging at your ear are no longer recognised as proper bidding signals!
The fall of the hammer, or gavel, indicates the conclusion of the bidding and confirms the sale to the last known bidder. Even if the lot is not sold, it may still be possible for an interested purchaser to negotiate a purchase through the auctioneer after the auction to see if terms can be agreed. |
